Fall Retreat (for those who didn't make it)

Posted by Anonymous |

For those of you who weren't able to make the retreat, here are some of the highlights from the talks.

Friday Night--Micah Eldridge
We all have a sex life--we're sexual beings. Our culture says sex it "to someone for our recreational benefit ." Three typical sexual conditions, from Genesis 16: (1) Sarah-- chose sexual sin in giving Hagar to Abraham. Her solution is repentance. (2)Abram--was easily tempted. His solution is to fight the fight. (3) Hagar: was abused and mistreated. Her solution is to know "the God who sees me."
It is the kindness of God that leads to repentance. Fear of punishment doesn't--only a surface level change.
What we are in need of is for the gospel--that Jesus is our savior and deliverer--to go deeper. Most of us accept the gospel for our salvation, but it hasn't permeated our whole lives.

Saturday Morning--Clay Kirkland
Wisdom list:
1. You don't have to know if you are going to marry a person before you date them.
2. Everyone's story is different--don't measure your story against others' story.
3. Only one relationship is supposed to work out.
4. Have really high standards for character, realistic standards for the 'extras.'
5. If you should date someone and break up, both of you should be able to leave as better people.
6. Clarity is a must in every stage of relationship.
7. Don't confuse intimacy with sexual desire.
8. Pay attention to your attraction.
9. You need boundaries.
10. Understand the difference between feelings and commitment.
11. Don't overspiritualize your relationship.
12. Don't get too serious too soon.
13. Waiting is not such a bad thing.

Saturday Night--Micah
Maturity in relationship is servanthood coming from love. In a mature relationship you are looking to be a servant and not for your own selfish gain.

These are highlights, so don't read too much into them. Talk to someone who went if you'd like clarification on any points!

from David...

God's doing a new thing in our director's staff in the last few days. I summarized it on my own blog and thought it'd be the best way of expressing things to you as well:

"Every so often the Wesley staff will have a theme month. Last October we had Manna month, after the dewy bread from heaven. This October, Manna II, our staff has been directed to ask the Lord to renew our desire for him and to seek him for things that have been pushed aside and neglected. Psalm 63 sums it up nicely. Personally, I am always struck by how easy it is for the "fire" to grow still and smoldering inside of me. It doesn't take much for the flames to die down low. As I've been praying during the last week, I was reminded that the Lord's perpetual invitation is to seek him, to thirst for him. Normal Christian life isn't supposed to be normal...it's suppose to be supernatural! Christ is in us! In the last few months, though the Father has been so faithful, I've gotten pretty comfortable with 'less than.' Less faith in prayer, less perseverance. Less trust in some areas (and strangely more, in others). Certainly less longing for him. I don't usually like overly spiritual blog posts--too cliche. But I post this instead of pictures of my beautiful girls because I think it's past time that we all woke up from the slumber. The Lord's inviting us to cling to him again."

One of my hopes for our Leadership community during the last two years has been that we would grow into a people that pursue the Lord without reservations, especially in prayer. That it would delight our heart to be with him, ask him for things, and do battle in intercession. I'm concerned for you who are on Leadership that the Enemy, the Devourer, is making attempts to devour your life, specifically in two things: (1) your "the pure and simple devotion" toward the Lord and (2) the diligence in which you pursue him in difficult times.

There is no other time but now...today. I'll say a few more things about this tomorrow night in the beginning of Leadership prayer. I'd encourage you in two things: to prepare your heart for what the Lord might do in you (he's doing new things) and to come to prayer at 7, as we all agreed to by the covenant.

I love you and fight for you every day.
David

Ladies & Gentlemen,

Regardless of the blah weather and weekend sadness, it is going to be an amazing week in Athens (especially at Wesley)!!

Leadership Prayer will be in the hallway outside the Grand Ballroom at Tate II. 7:00 as usual. I want to encourage all of you to be there. It is the middle of the semester which makes it easy to let responsibilities slide. But remember, this responsibility allows you to grow closer to Jesus!! How amazing is that!?!

Fall Retreat is NEXT weekend. It costs $55 plus $10 for a shirt. We will be learning about relationships. Who couldn't grow in greater knowledge here? I know I don't have it figured out!!! Sign up this week!

Mission Trip sign ups go out THIS week. Get excited and see a future post on all the wonderful places we are going later this week.
